Design Process

Design Opportunity

Most of the elderly need to take at least one kind of medication daily. However, they tend to forget to take the right medication with right dosage at the right time. Caregivers could help patients with medication adherence but they won’t be available all time and this will affect patient’s health and well-being.

Persona

It’s the goal for this project to design a system that could help old people keep tracking of their medication taking activity. Based on research and affinity mapping, I created a persona to help the design process.

Design overview

Push alarm notification + user action

As setup, each time the patient missed a medication, the user (care giver) would receive a push alarm notification and this will take the user to continue with immediate actions: remind the patient again, call the patient, or view the details of the missed medication.

Medication alert setup

Once the user starts to use the MedMinder application, she could either sync all the medication information from pharmacy system (with QR code or some other type of code), doctor prescription; or she can manually enter those information on a cellphone. The main features are presented with detailed interaction.

Testing Interview Structure

In the less than 30-minute testing interview, participants were introduced to the purpose of the interview, project objectives, testing method, and then tested the application prototype with clear instructions, and finally were asked about the feedbacks for the application.

Tools

Adobe Experience Design App and iPhone 6s.

Testing Method and Instructions

This is a medium fidelity application prototype completed using Adobe Experience Design.
The main design focus of this prototype would be:

add new medication setting (time, dosage, alert)

push alarm notification + user action

overall user information flow and visual layout

Participants need to complete the following tasks with instructions:

Part 1 Login and home page

Login the application from landing page by tapping the “user name space” and “login button”

Answer how many missed medication shown

Part 2 Med setting page

Get in to “Med setting” page

Add a new medication

Type in the new medication name, (time is setup already), repeat every MWF, choose tablets amount 4, make alert 1 five minutes before, set Alert 1 tone to Chord, set “take with food” to “Before”

Save this new medication

Part 3 Push alarm notification and action

View the missed medication

Call Mary to remind her to take medication

Any feedbacks about the information flow?

Any feedbacks about the interaction/visual layout design?

Overall, what do you think about the application? Which part do you like/dislike?

Observation and Feedbacks
User #1

Part 1 Login and home page

Login the application from landing page by tapping the “user name space” and “login button” very easy

Answer how many missed medication shown very easy

Part 2 Med setting page

Get in to “Med setting” it took him two seconds to find the icon to click on

Add a new medication very easy but he thought it’s not obvious enough

Type in the new medication name, (time is setup already), repeat every MWF, choose tablets amount 4, make alert 1 five minutes before, set Alert 1 tone to Chord, set “take with food” to “Before” very easy

Save this new medication

Part 3 Push alarm notification and action

View the missed medication very easy

Call Mary to remind her to take medication

Feedbacks

Any feedbacks about the information flow? It’s very clear what to expect next

Any feedbacks about the interaction/visual layout design? Clean design.

Overall, what do you think about the application? Which part do you like/dislike?

“I think in the alert setting part, the alert tone/volume is less important than take with food, so you might want to reverse the order”

“The medication setting is a little bit too long for me, but I think it might be necessary since you want to setup the medication very carefully to avoid errors”

“You can move the add medication plus sign down to the main text body and make a button, that way it’s even clearer to locate the add medication button”

“I really like the landing page of this application, it’s clean but very informative! Once you logged in you have all the information you need, that’s great!”

User #2

Part 1 Login and home page

Login the application from landing page by tapping the “user name space” and “login button”
line is a decoration element, but the user tried to tap on it

Answer how many missed medication shown
very easy but he said “calendar icon is a little bit confusing and small” and “it might be just me”.

Part 2 Med setting page

Get in to “Med setting” page
he was wondering if he could choose a different person to monitor medication usage

Add a new medication easy

Type in the new medication name, (time is setup already), repeat every MWF, choose tablets amount 4, make alert 1 five minutes before, set Alert 1 tone to Chord, set “take with food” to “Before” very easy

Save this new medication
easy, but he was wondering if the top/bottom part of the UI could stick on the position while scrolling the content

Part 3 Push alarm notification and action

View the missed medication

Call Mary to remind her to take medication very easy

Feedbacks

Any feedbacks about the information flow?
Clear, but “repeat” snooze feature. Maybe it works with apple user and different with android user?”

Any feedbacks about the interaction/visual layout design?
The tab not sticky on the top/bottom when scrolling (Adobe XD function limitation)

Overall, what do you think about the application? Which part do you like/dislike?

“The prototype is pretty detailed”

“I like the push alarm notification design, it’s very convenient to have that feature.”

“The one in this design is in default that you have “Mary” as your patient, and the medication setting are about her medication usage, what if you have more than one patient that you want to monitor?”
